Vignettes

Yesterday we studied three types of vignettes and learned how to make them. We also talked about creative ways to frame individual photos through PhotoShop. Today you will be making a collage using 5-7 of your portraits. Arrange them neatly and use creative techniques to give your project some pizzazz! I'm looking for imagination, creativity, and technical skill. This will prepare us for our next assignment, creating a collage from the Elizabethian Gardens shots.

Field Trip

We have had some changes that had to be made in the dates for the Elizabethian Gardens field trip. My first period class will go tomorrow. Please have your permission slips signed and bring in $7.00. You might want a little extra money to buy a coke or snack while on the trip. We will be back in time for lunch in the cafeteria. BRING YOUR CAMERAS! Any student who does not have a camera will not be permitted to go---plain and simple. If you are having some kind of technical problems with your digital, get one of those 36 exposure disposables. My 3rd period class will be going on October 31st, while 4th period will be going on November 1st. These are afternoon trips. You will eat first lunch at school. Again, you'd be wise to bring along a little money for anything extra you might want. Any student who is unable to go on the field trip will be given work to do in the media center. On the trip, PLEASE be on your best behavior and get lots of photos! We will use them in a collage when we get back to class.

ARE YOU USING THIS SITE?????

Well, you should be. If you get confused about an assignment, just look here! I post the criteria and due date for each assignment on this site. And I post this information well in advance, so you should always be prepared for class! Any student who confidentially places a note in my hand saying you saw this message, between now and Friday will be awarded one extra credit point on your final report card grade. That could make the difference in a letter grade for some of you! Keep it quiet, or the deal is off!! I want the students to each find this for themselves! Ms. Finch

Deadlines

You should be working on your Before and After portraits. Three Before and After shots will each be pasted into a word document (three pages). Place the photos side-by-side so that we can see all the improvements you made! This is due Friday, October 20th. Today (Thursday) is the last day to turn in the Paint activity with a late grade. Tomorrow will be the last day to turn in "Day in the Life" with a late grade.

Portraits

We will be doing a lot of work with portraits during the next several days. Make sure you have enough! You will need to have at least twelve good, clean shots. For now, be cropping and color correcting. Make sure you save the original just like it came out of the camera. Our first assignment with portraits will be to do three before and after shots. Choose the three that show the most dramatic change from retouching. Just make sure you are ENHANCING rather than detracting from the photos!

BOOK WORK

Just a reminder......If you come to class without your photos taken, and therefore have nothing to work on, you will be assigned book work and a paper to write. Please be prepared with your photo shoot assignment! I post the assignments well in advance, so you should always have something to work on!

Portraits

Your next photo shoot will be a portrait. I'd like you to try hard to duplicate portrait studio quality. This should be of only one person. Pay attention to your lighting and background. As always, take the equivalent of one roll of film--or 35-40 shots. That should give you enough to choose from to submit your contact sheet of 12 on Monday, 10/16.

Day in the Life Project

Your Day in the Life photos are due Monday. At that time you will make a contact sheet of the best 12 photos. These should be school-related. Then choose your best six to paste into a word document with captions. Please put all six photos on one page. Arrange them neatly. They should all be properly cropped and enhanced through PhotoShop. I'd like you to prepare this as if it was for a school newspaper or the yearbook. The final project will be due on Friday, 10/13.

Butterfly Garden Project

For this project we are going to combine elements of three photos to create a fourth. It can be abstract or natural, but should be well-planned with good composition. You will turn in a contact sheet with the four photos, as well as a final photo. Don't forget to flatten the image and save as JPEG. This will be due Tuesday, 10/10.

Extra credit......

As I announced Monday, I am offering extra credit work to anyone who is interested, to help bring up your grades on the last test. If you made below 60, I will bring your grade up to passing (70). If you made 60 or above, I will add 10 points to your test grade. You need to write a 1 1/2 page paper explaining exposure, aperture and shutter speed, f/stops, and depth of field. The paper should be in your own words, but you can use any resources available for the information. If you took good notes during Monday's lecture, you should be able to write the paper just from your notes. This paper is due to me by the end of school today.

A day in the life...

Please bring your camera to school every day this week and take photos. This project will be entitled "A day in the life..." and should only include school-related photos. I do NOT want photos of your friends smiling and waving at the camera. These should be candid shots. Think, newspaper coverage. These photos should be in by Monday, October 9th. They may include school sports activities on the weekend.

Butterfly Garden

I am planning a trip to the Butterfly Garden on Thursday, October 5th, to take some photos. You MUST bring your permission slip back, signed by your parents, before that date in order to go. Also, if you forget your camera that day, you will be doing paperwork in the library while we are on the fieldtrip.
